Degaussers

A degausser erases hard drives and tapes with a strong magnetic field. Afterwards the data can no longer be read and the drive no longer works. Degaussing has no effect on SSDs and flash memory; for those you need destroyers and shredders.

About degaussing

Can a degaussed hard drive be reused?

No. Degaussing also erases the servo information a hard drive needs to operate. The drive is waste afterwards and can be physically destroyed or dismantled for recycling.

Does degaussing work on SSDs?

No. SSDs and flash memory do not store data magnetically. They need physical destruction, for example with a destroyer with SSD insert or a shredder.

Which degausser is on the NSA/CSS list?

Of the Garner degaussers, the TS-1XT Series is on the NSA/CSS Evaluated Products List for magnetic degaussers (October 2026). The NSA requires hard drives erased with a listed degausser to be physically deformed afterwards, for example with the PD-5E.

How do I prove that a drive has been erased?

With IRONCLAD verification and a certificate of destruction for each batch. That records which media were destroyed, when and how.

Which degausser suits your media and volume?

A specialist will help you choose, including verification and record-keeping.
