The vertical DiskMantler works on the same principle as the horizontal version: controlled shock and vibration loosen the fasteners, and the drive comes apart into its main components. The difference is the orientation. Upright, the machine takes up less floor space and fits better into an existing line.
Garner specifies a cycle of under 30 seconds per drive, with the circuit board released within 7 seconds. The machine itself draws at most 12 W; the work is done by compressed air, 5.7–7.1 l/s at 8.3 bar per unit.
The vertical DiskMantler is also the dismantling unit in the DiskMantler Suite, where a DeMAG demagnetises the drives first and conveyors move them through the line.
